2012 New Year’s Resolutions – 20 of them

One of the things I’ve been advocating with friends is the concept of coming up with 20 new year’s resolutions. 20 is a big number and that’s what makes the exercise so interesting. You’ll easily come up with the first 3-5; but after that point, the activity becomes challenging and you really have to think about creative ways to make the 2012 “you” better than the 2011 version of yourself. This type of thinking really gets you to think big and outside of the normal subconscious boundaries that your mind delimits you to.
So once you have your list of 20 resolutions, the next step is to choose your top 3 and make them happen. Why 3? Well, human beings usually count 1, 2, 3, “many” and the second you are in the “many” category, you’ll get overwhelmed and do nothing. So, the goal is to start with 3 and once you’re done, you’ll get to go back to your shopping list and choose your next 3 – sounds like fun? Oh, it is.
So, here are my first 3 resolutions for 2012:
1) Join the 5 o’clock club (i.e. wake up at between 5-6am on weekdays)
2) Beat my 2011 Marathon Time: 4hrs & 18 minutes
3) Drop to 150lbs (currently at 156)
Pro Tip: New Year’s resolutions are like wall street revenue forecasts. You generally don’t want to make your goals too difficult but make them so that you can definitely achieve them. With that said, what you’ll really be trying to do is over achieve and beat those goals!
